1. Freewrite: Review a folktale, sequence events, what is the topic and theme. Select 2 events to justify this theme. Use the theme to create an inference about what the culture of origin values. 2. Introduction to "The People Could Fly" folktale. Students made text-to-self connections, text-to-text connections, and text-to-world connections. -Large group discussion of warm up -"Bone Black" short story preview: Students analyzed point of view, topic, and theme of text "puzzle" pieces. - Students read "Bone Black" while conducting the "hold your thinking" active reading strategy.
